Cambridge Assessment English is a department of Cambridge University,
which is focused on providing examinations and examination
preparation materials It is accepted by over 20,000 organisations
worldwide (corporate, governmental bodies and educational institutions.)
The Cambridge Assessment English department has over 100
years of experience and it aligns its examinations and preparation
materials in line with CEFR.
CEFR stands for the Common
European Framework of Reference.
CEFR is a guideline used to describe achievements of learners of foreign languages across Europe and, increasingly, in other countries. It was put together by the Council of Europe as the main part of the project “Language Learning for European Citizenship” between 1989 and 1996.
Its main aim is to provide a method of learning, teaching and assessing which applies to all languages in Europe. In November 2001, a European Union Council Resolution recommended using the CEFR to set up systems of validation of language ability. The six reference levels are becoming widely accepted as the European standard
for grading an individual’s language proficiency. In respect of English
language assessment, Cambridge Assessment Englishare in charge of the English language aspect.
What do these levels mean?
C2: Proficient in English
C1 : Can use English with a degree of complexity
B2: Is functional in English
B1: Is semi-functional in English
A2: Finds it difficult to function in English
A1: Cannot function in English
